From reel life to real life: It Could Happen to You

We've all heard stories of lottery winners striking it rich. Often, these winners remain anonymous, leaving us to wonder what happens after the initial excitement fades. While some tales are dramatized in movies, others are stranger than fiction. Today, we'll explore the captivating world of lottery wins, comparing Hollywood portrayals to real-life experiences.

A classic rom-com lottery tale

Directed by Andrew Bergman, "It Could Happen To You" (1994) is a charming romantic comedy with a lottery twist. Nicolas Cage stars as Charlie Lang, a good-natured police officer who strikes up a conversation with waitress Yvonne Biasi, played by Bridget Fonda.

When Charlie realizes he has forgotten his wallet, he jokingly offers to share half of his lottery winnings if his ticket wins. As luck would have it, Charlie's ticket does hit the jackpot, throwing his life into a whirlwind. His materialistic wife Muriel, played by Rosie Perez, hatches a scheme to keep all the money for herself. Meanwhile, a sweet romance sparks between Charlie and Yvonne, adding a heartwarming layer to the story.

The real story: A friendship takes a lucky turn

The real story behind "It Could Happen To You" is far less dramatic but equally heartwarming. In 1985, Robert Cunningham, a New York police officer, and Phyllis Penzo, a waitress he knew for years, decided to buy a lottery ticket together.

“Phyl and I had been friends for about 15 years. South Pizzeria, where she worked, was a hangout for the Yonkers cops. One day, as a joke, I said, "Let's buy a lottery ticket together in lieu of a tip,” Cunningham told Entertainment Weekly.

Penzo said:

We each picked three numbers. Naturally, I was thrilled when we won. But, no, I didn't marry Bob, and I would never go up in one of those balloons [as Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda do in the movie to celebrate]!

They split the numbers, each picking three. Lady Luck smiled upon them, and they won a staggering $6 million. Unlike the movie, there was no romantic entanglement or marital strife. Robert and Phyllis, already happily married to their respective partners, remained friends and enjoyed their newfound financial security.

Penzo stated:

I bought a house, I bought a car for my daughter and my husband, and I did some traveling to see our grandchildren. At one time, I had considered opening a restaurant, but after 27 years as a waitress, you reach the age where you just can't do those hours anymore.

In the film, the lead character's wife does not want him to split the prize-winning money with his friend. Cunningham's wife had a different response:

She said, “Hey, she picked three of those winning numbers. She gets her half of the pot."

Other lottery-themed films

Lottery wins have captivated filmmakers for decades. Here are a few other movies that explore the windfalls and woes of sudden wealth:

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

Down on their luck in 1925 Mexico, two Americans, Fred Dobbs and Bob Curtin, are scraping by. A chance lottery win becomes their ticket out of poverty when they use the winnings to partner with a wily old prospector, Howard, to hunt for gold in the treacherous Sierra Madre mountains. The journey is brutal - harsh terrain, dwindling supplies, and bandits are just some of the dangers they face. But the biggest threat comes from within as the promise of riches unleashes greed and paranoia, twisting their friendship. Will they strike gold and escape the mountains alive, or will the treasure become their undoing? The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a classic Western that explores the dark side of human nature and the high price of fortune, all sparked by a lucky lottery ticket.

Brewster's Millions (1985)

This isn't your typical lottery winner story. Monty Brewster, a down-on-his-luck minor league baseball pitcher, gets a chance at a life-changing $300 million inheritance from a great-uncle he never met. There's a twist, though: Monty must spend $30 million in just 30 days under wacky conditions. He can't buy anything that lasts, donate too much to charity, or even tell anyone about the crazy challenge. Hilarity ensues as Monty, with his loyal best friend Spike by his side, tries to blow through a fortune in a month. But beware, there are those at the law firm handling the inheritance who would love to see Monty fail and keep the money for themselves. Will Monty conquer his spending spree and inherit the big bucks? You'll have to watch to find out!

The Ticket (1997)

This dramatic film showcases love on the rocks with a side of danger. Cee Cee Reicker's marriage to Keith is already on shaky ground. When Keith wins a massive $23 million lottery prize, Cee Cee wonders if money can fix their failing relationship. Skeptical and hesitant, she joins Keith and their son on a plane trip to claim the winnings. However, their journey takes a terrifying turn when the plane crashes in a snowy mountain region. The shocking truth emerges – the crash wasn't an accident. Now, Cee Cee must fight for survival while unraveling the mystery behind the crash and the fate of her fractured marriage.

Kill Me If You Dare (2024)

Get ready for a rom-com - but it's not your typical happily ever after story. Remember Piotr and Natalia? They were once a passionate couple, but five years of marriage have dulled the spark. Their anniversary dinner at a discount food court (paid for with coupons!) is a perfect example. When Piotr presents Natalia with wilting flowers and an ironing board as "gifts," it's clear things are rough. But then, fate throws them a curveball – a winning lottery ticket worth millions. Instead of rekindling their love, the windfall ignites a dark comedy of errors. Desperation and greed take hold as Piotr and Natalia hatch outlandish plans to eliminate each other and claim the prize for themselves. Will their murderous schemes succeed? Or will they find a way to rekindle the flame amidst the chaos?
