Four people face charges after a brazen attempt to steal lottery tickets from a San Francisco convenience store.

Security footage captured the dramatic scene - a truck slammed into the storefront, followed by a suspect grabbing lottery tickets before fleeing.

Deja vu for store owner

This wasn't the first time lottery tickets were targeted at the store. Owner Nick Lawson is no stranger to these crimes. Just a year ago, thieves snagged $10,000 worth of tickets. Lawson had since reinforced the lottery ticket area, but this time the loss was thankfully smaller, around $350.

“It’s just sad that in San Francisco and the Bay Area in General, it’s hard to be a small business owner, “ Lawson told reporters.

Following the trail

Police pieced together evidence from the crime scene, including the number of suspects and their getaway vehicles. Alert neighbors provided valuable tips, helping officers identify the suspect vehicles.

The trail led police to Oakland, where they spotted the suspect vehicles on the highway. Two suspects were apprehended in a disabled vehicle. The other two were caught by Oakland police trying to cash in the stolen tickets.

Oakland burglary

Just days earlier, another California Lottery theft made headlines in Oakland. Security footage from a local market showed two individuals using a blowtorch to gain entry and steal scratch-off tickets.

The burglary caused roughly $4,000 in damage to the store, adding insult to injury for the owner who recognized the suspects as regular customers.

California Lottery wins big in 2024

Despite the unfortunate incidents of theft, the California Lottery has continued to bring joy and financial rewards to countless players across the state. There have been some major wins this year, with several players taking home life-changing sums of money.

One lucky ticket holder in Southern California matched five of the six winning numbers in the Mega Millions draw, claiming a prize worth over $2 million. The jackpot itself has continued to climb, reaching astronomical heights.

Powerball has also been generous to California players. In just one month, two separate tickets sold in the state won the grand prize, totaling over $44 million combined.

One lucky winner purchased their ticket at a Ralphs grocery store in Dana Point, while the other was purchased at Romey's Liquor Store in Woodland.

Even the scratch-off games have produced some big winners. A California Lottery player bought a Multiplier Craze Scratchers ticket at the Orange County Fair and scratched off a $1 million prize. The lucky winner has yet to come forward to claim their prize.

Funding the future

The California Lottery continues to make a significant impact on public education. Sales from Mega Millions alone have generated more than $60 million for schools since early June. This ongoing support is a testament to the lottery's commitment to giving back to the community.
