Who were the three rebel queens?

In 1878, when St. Croix was a Danish colony, three former slave women, Mary Thomas, Mathilda McBean, Axeline Elizabeth Salomon, known as Agnes, and Susanna, led a labor revolt against the Danish government. Their demands were for improved working and living conditions. During the revolt, which became known as “Fireburn,” more than three-quarters of the town of Frederiksted was destroyed by fire, including factories, homes, and fields. While conditions only improved slightly following the revolt, the three women had inspired the people of St. Croix, who continued to fight for equality. Today, the women are revered as Queen Mary, Queen Agnes, and Queen Matilda – The Three Queens of the Virgin Islands.
