They say nothing good happens after midnight, but a Maryland woman has a legitimate reason to argue against that theory after finding out she won big in the Maryland Lottery after the clock struck 12!

Quick Pick winning ticket

Tawny Barnwell of Frederick plays every Multi-Match drawing. She had the computer generate her numbers when she purchased her Quick Pick ticket for $4 for the June 20 drawing.

It was after midnight when Barnwell checked her ticket to see if she had a winner and she let out a scream of joy, which happened to wake up her husband. Barnwell won $540,000 after matching all six winning numbers for that night's drawing.

“I looked at it. I looked at it and I kept looking at it. I couldn't believe it,” Tawny said, remembering how shocked she was after she saw her jackpot win. “It was astonishing.”

The winning numbers for the June 20 drawing were 5, 10, 11, 25, 30, and 37.

Lucky lottery retailer

Barnwell purchased the winning ticket from Mt. Airy Exxon, located at 4400 Mill Bottom Road in Frederick County. She said the lottery retailer across the street from the Exxon has a banner promoting the store's sale of a big winning lottery ticket. Now she is excited that her retailer is also a big winner!

For selling the winning ticket, Mt. Airy Exxon will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery, along with a promotional banner to display!

Big plans for the winnings

With Tawny making her way to lottery headquarters to get her winnings, it's now time to make plans for that money. She told lottery officials she plans on putting the money toward a new house and spending some of it on her grandchildren.

She is also a huge fan of the Baltimore Orioles, and she even drives to Baltimore a few times a month to watch a game, so Orioles games are probably in her future. Tawny also likes to fish, so buying a boat could be one of her ways of enjoying her winnings!

Work trip pays off for this trucker

A truck driver from Texas made a pitstop in Maryland last month and left the state with a $50,000 winning Powerball ticket!

The San Benito, Texas, father of three dropped off a load in Hagerstown, Maryland, and then stopped at the nearby Pilot Travel Center, located at 11633 Greencastle Pike, for some snacks, Powerball, and Mega Millions tickets before getting back on the highway.

That was a wise choice, as his Powerball tickets for the Monday, July 15, drawing ended up matching four of the white ball numbers and the Powerball number to win $50,000. The winning white ball numbers that night were 9, 31, 39, 40, and 45, and the Powerball number was 23.

Three days and more than 1,700 miles later, he checked his ticket to see if he had a winner.

“I was on the road again and decided to check my tickets on the Powerball website,” said the married father of three. “I saw my matching numbers and knew it was something, but (I) wasn't sure how much.”

It was a $50,000 winner, but now he had to make his way to Maryland to claim his winnings. He explained the situation to his company, so his boss arranged a work route that would take the winner through Maryland. He made an appointment to claim the prize that coincided with his work trip.

Now that he has the money in hand, he said he plans on putting it into his retirement fund.

Enjoy playing the Maryland Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
