With the Mega Millions jackpot at $800 million for tomorrow night's drawing, every lottery player in every state is hoping to score a big jackpot win. However, it looks like some states are more overdue than others in scoring that big jackpot win!

Most overdue states for a big win

As the Mega Millions jackpot creeps closer and closer to that $1 billion mark, more and more people will start buying tickets in hopes of winning that life-changing jackpot.

According to a study conducted by Lucky Me, the five states that are most overdue for a jackpot win are:

  1. Kentucky
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Arkansas
  4. Mississippi
  5. New Mexico

The website analyzed data regarding what states have won the lottery over the last ten years. In the past decade, the residents in 11 states and Washington, D.C., haven't won a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot. While the 12 jurisdictions haven't won a jackpot, Lucky Me ranked the states by population, which gave us the list of five above.

According to the data, a Kentucky resident last won the lottery on December 11, 2010, and they couldn't even win it alone. The lucky winner matched all of the winning Powerball numbers to win the $37.5 million jackpot. However, someone in Illinois also matched all the winning numbers, so they split the jackpot.

It seems like Kentucky is way overdue for a big win without having to split it!

The least overdue states for a big win

On the flip side of things, the bottom five states on the list are states that are least overdue for a jackpot win and seem to be hogging these jackpots! Those five states are:

  • New York
  • Tennessee
  • New Jersey
  • Vermont
  • New Hampshire

New Jersey has been extra greedy in 2024, as one lucky player won $222.6 million in June playing Powerball. This comes after another New Jersey Lottery player won $1.13 billion playing Mega Millions in March.

Lucky numbers

While the Powerball jackpot sits at $121 million and the Mega Millions sits at $800 million, people want to break that non-winning streak for these states. You need the winning numbers to do that, and Lucky Me also shared some stats for those looking to win big:

  • Mega Millions - The numbers most overdue for a jackpot drawing are 23, 36, 49, 51, and 65.
  • Powerball - The numbers most overdue for a jackpot drawing are 60, 65, 66, 67, and 68.
  • Mega Millions - The most common winning Mega Millions lottery numbers are 4, 9, 18, 39, and 46.
  • Powerball - The most common winning Powerball lottery numbers are 9, 10, 11, 13, and 17.

While we are hoping to win either of those jackpots, you must also keep the odds in mind. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million. However, someone beats those odds all the time, so why not you this time?

Enjoy playing the lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
